Unkoown miscreants set afire national park in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 23: Unidentified miscreants have set on fire Keibul Lamjao national park, home to rare species Brow-Antelered Deer, in Manipur's Bishenpur district, official reports said on Monday.

Major portions of the park were seen burning after they were set afire by the miscreants in the morning of yesterday and some deer might have been killed, the reports said.

The forest areas which are completely destroyed are Haobou Maning, Chingmei Natal, Kajil Achouba, Ngakhapat, Khordak Mamei, Khordak Ichil, Toya Ching and surrounding places.

Fire service personnel from nearby Moirang town rushed to the spot and were still struggling to control the blaze, the reports said.

According to some local residents, the fire might have been set off by central para military personnel as part of their strategy to drive out militants from the park.

They said some Assam Rifles personnel were seen at the periphery of the park and last night gunshots were heard in the area.
