Effects of global warming being felt in Sikkim

GANGTOK, Feb 23 – The gradual effects of global warming have already been felt in Sikkim this year.

According to information, North Sikkim last year recorded only a single snowfall. Expressing concern over the same, president, Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) Paljor Lachungpa today said that such climatic variations never happened before as North Sikkim usually experienced minimum of 16 times snowfall in a year.

Speaking to reporters today, he said that the endeavour of TAAS to start alpine skiing from this year could not be achieved due to lack of snowfall. We have planned to start skiing for tourists at Yumthang and Kupup but due to less snowfall it could not be started, Lachungpa said.

He added that under the capacity training programme 30 local youths have been specially trained in skiing at Himachal Pradesh. We are hopeful that we could start the said adventure sport from next year if we get heavy snowfall, he said.
