Scarcity of essentials looming large

Guwahati : The scarcity of essential commodities loomed large in the North East with no breakthrough in the deadlock caused by the nation-wide transporters strike entering the fifth day today.

The North East, connected by the chicken neck in North Bengal with the rest of the country, is supplied essential commodities, mostly perishables, from other states and with trucks not moving, there is a danger of scarcity.

Prices of essential commodities have already increased and the district authorities have strictly warned traders not to hoard but release goods regularly at fair prices, official sources said.

More than 40 per cent of trucks coming to Assam with essentials to be supplied to the other N E states have also come to a standstill following the strike as they are totally dependant on roadway in the absence of rail network.

Trucks were seen stranded on the national highways with transporters refusing to allow them to move. Kamrup Chamber of Commerce president Mahavir Jain said the supply situation is being monitored but at present sufficient stock of essentials have been kept to avoid a crisis and there was no need to panic.
