Manipur, Meghalaya hail victory

May 14 : The Manipur government congratulated the Congress government in neighbouring Assam on its hattrick in the elections and hoped that both the Congress-ruled states would work together to solve the problems in the Northeast.

“We congratulate Tarun Gogoi and his team for the success in the state Assembly elections and welcome their return to power for the third consecutive term. The people of Assam did the right thing in bringing the Congress back to power,” Manipur government spokesperson and irrigation and flood control minister N. Biren Singh said.

The Ibobi Singh government attributed the victory of Congress in Assam to the changes brought about by the Tarun Gogoi government and also the attention given by the UPA government at the Centre to the development and efforts to bring peace in the Northeast.

The Assam result also boosted the morale of the Congress-led Secular Progressive Front ministry in Imphal.

The Meghalaya government was hopeful that the victory of the Congress in Assam would restore the continuity of dialogue on the long-pending border dispute.

Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma today said the coming back of Congress to power in Assam has raised hopes of a better coordination between both the governments to find an amicable solution to the pending border dispute issue.

“I have called up my Assam counterpart to congratulate him on the victory,” Sangma, who is camping in Delhi, said over the phone.
