Tripura MPs demand better rail service

AGARTALA, Dec 13 – Three Tripura MPs – Khagen Das, Bajuban Riayan and Matilal Sarkar, who met Chairman of Raiways Board SS Khurana in Delhi on Tuesday, have strongly demanded immediate remedial measures to improve the deplorable rail services in the State.

They informed the Chairman the trains are not running as per schedule and on the contrary, there are frequent occasions that the trains are getting abnormally late by two to four hours causing serious inconvenience to the passengers.

They said that there has been severe shortage of staff to man the rail service up to Agartala. “It has also been noticed that signal staff are not available which may lead to accidents”, they pointed out.

Besides request for cleaning of latrines and urinals inside trains, they also apprised him of the shortage of staff at the rail stations. “Even at Agartala station, commercial staff find it difficult to cope with the heavy rush of passengers to book tickets that resulted in regular chaos and disturbance”, they said. They also urged Khurana to maintain proper and regular maintenance of railway tracks to ensure normal speed of trains.

Besides operational demands, they also spoke on some other important demands. The demands include strengthening of security for running trains, expedition of Broad Gauge (BG) conversion work and ongoing railway construction work up to Sabroom, installation of CCTV at Agartala and Dharmanagar railway stations and replacement of dilapidated wagons.

On the security aspect, they said the inadequate security for moving trains might appear fatal anytime. “Security should be beefed up to avoid any untoward incident”, they said.

In the press release, it was said that the Chairman of the Ralways Board has assured the MPs to look into the matter raised by the three MPs.
