grandmother's property. She claims police turned down her complaint on the ground that it was a civil matter and even threatened to put her behind bars.
Anu Ganguli, the granddaughter of Bhagwati Chowdhary, is a resident of Block-P at New Alipore a posh locality in south Kolkata. Recently, her uncle and his wife arrived at this address.
Anu alleges that the couple assaulted her and abused her mother after an altercation on November 9. "My uncle asked me about the documents of the properties owned by my grandmother. She is a cancer patient and not in a position to speak. We told him that all the papers are with her lawyer. Another relative, Kalpana Chadda, also told him so. But my uncle and his wife kept pressuring us to give him power of attorney over our family property," Anu says, adding that her mother has been living in this house for 25 years.
She went to New Alipore police station with her injury reports but could only register a general diary(GDE No: 701/ Dt.09/11/09). "Till now, police haven't taken any action," she said.
Anu alleges that her uncle and aunt did not give up after the complaint was lodged. "They come to our apartment, abuse us and create chaos. It is telling on my grandmother's health. She had to be taken to hospital yet again on Friday evening," said Anu.
Anu again went to the police station, but the officers have still not accepted her complaint, she says. "Sudipta Nag, the OC of the police station, flatly refused to help me. While I asked for the reason, he got furious and asked me to leave. He even threatened to put me behind bars if I continued to argue with him," says Anu.
Nag, however, rubbished the allegation. "She came here on a civil matter, where police have nothing to do. She was trying to influence us in their property-related dispute," he said, adding that he had not received any complaint related to assault.
Senior Kolkata police officers, however, do not agree with the OC. "The complainant has a right to register a case of criminal trespassing against the intruder. The dispute may be over a civil matter, but police cannot prevent her from lodging the complaint," said a senior officer. Joint commissioner Jawed Shamim advised Anu to contact divisional deputy commissioner Supratim Sarkar for assistance.
TOI tried to contact the IAS couple but was not successful.
