Dr KS Subramaniam, IPS (retd) who is currently a visiting professor of Jamia Millia University, New Delhi, Sumit Chakravarty who is the editor of popular Mainstream magazine, Kavita Srivastava of the PUCL and Vasundhara Jairath of Delhi Solidarity Group have met Manipur chief minister O.Ibobi Singh, state Director General of Police Y. Joykumar, public leaders, journalists and kins of those fake encounter victims during their stay here since November 5.
According to the team members their mission has been to visit and interact with the relatives of those victims killed in alleged fake encounters and to take accounts of the number of killed, tortured and arrested, detained by the security forces. The team members also said that interacting with those in jails and those released after detention or arrest is their purpose of coming to the state. Making a narrative and a photo documentation each and then analyzing the findings to be presented to the media both national and regional is also one of their aims of visiting the state, according to the team.
During the meeting with the chief minister, the state DGP who was also present at the time told the 'fact-finding' team members that altogether 260 people have been killed in the current year and that all of them were underground elements, according to the team members. Chief minister O. Ibobi Singh, as per the disclosure of the 'fact-finding' team members, had informed them that he was ready to meet again the agitating groups but 'several of their demands could never be met.
The visiting team also met hunger striker Irom Sharmila on November 6. According to this team members, through their discussions in Imphal with the people, they have come across repeated allegations against security forces. The visiting team concluded that the situation in Manipur is deteriorating. However, the team members said that the final report of their finding s will be released on November 18 in New Delhi.
