Spurt in smuggling of medicines from Assam

GUWAHATI, Aug 7 – Banned and prescribed life saving medicines meant for consumption in Assam are being smuggled in bulk quantities to countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Official sources made this revelation after the Customs department unearthed involvement of an international racket behind such illegal trade, which after extracting components like Ephedrine Hydrochloride and Pseudo Ephedrine Hydrochloride, mostly found in some exclusive drugs, has been using them for making of narcotics substances in the neighbouring countries.

Official sources informed The Assam Tribune that the Customs Department, which had recently seized several lakh such tablets, during the course of the investigation, found that the said tablets were meant for smuggling to foreign countries.

“The investigation is on and very soon we would crack down on the members of the racket, especially those operating in the region” sources stated, adding that involvement of some authorised drug dealers cannot be ruled out.

“These tablets, which are priced from 60 paise to one rupee each in the State are sold for Rs 30- Rs 40 in the neighbouring countries. Of late, it has emerged as the most lucrative international trade. As the profit margin is too high, more and more people are getting involved in it,” said the source.

Sources even claimed that the narcotics substances made out of the tablets are circulated to many other countries.

Moreover, smuggling of phensydryl too has increased but is more or less confined to Bangladesh.

The Customs department, it may be mentioned, had seized items worth over Rs 1 crore last year. This year till July, claimed and unclaimed items including Chinese cell phones, and contraband amongst others worth around Rs 30 lakh have already been seized.
