Holding placards and banners condemning the CBI’s attitude in the handling of the case of Parag Das’ murder, journalists gathered at the city’s Rotary Club and marched through the all-important locations of the city.
Parag Das was the Executive Editor of Asomiya Pratidin, an Assamese vernacular daily.
This mass protest march was jointly organised by the journalists with the Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and many other organisations.
On Tuesday, a local court had acquitted Mridul Phukan, the prime accused in Parag Das murder case that took place in 1996 due to lack of evidence.
“It is really shameful on all of us. We find no reason for the existence of an investigative agency like CBI, if they can’t find out the killers of such an incident… It is very shameful for all of us, we really condemned the inaction and the shameless activities of CBI,” said Sudeepta Goswami, a journalist.
The MASS, which is a forum dedicated to protect human rights, was founded by Parag Das.
MASS has given a call for total strike in the region on July 30 and also proposed to appeal before the High Court against the District Session Judge’s verdict.
