Naga gunmen attack Dimasa village, kill three

GUWAHATI: Three persons were killed and several wounded in an attack by suspected Naga gunmen at the Fiding Dimasagaon, nearly 350 km from Guwahati, in Assam's North Cachar Hills district on Saturday morning.

Police said a group of about 20 to 25 gunmen raided the Dimasa-dominated village near Fiding railway station around 6 in the morning and started firing indiscriminately. They also set afire 43 houses in the village dominated by the anti-talks faction of the Dima Halam Daogah (DHD).

Thanagjam Dibhrakete (40) and Ripunjay Dibhrakete (20) died on the spot, while Hatulal Dibhrakete (40) succumbed to his injuries at at Mahur Civil Hospital. All the injured were rushed to hospital, police said.

Citizen's Rights Protection Voluneteers, a group which not many have heard of, owned up to the attack on the Dimasa village and warned of more such attacks on Dimasas in future.

This is the second attack by suspected Naga gunmen in the village in the past 24 hours.

Superintendent of police (North Cachar Hills) M Sarma said night curfew has been clamped in the district from Saturday evening as a precautionary measure.

On Friday morning, suspected Naga gunmen Joraigaon, also a Dimasa village in the district, and set all houses in the hamlet on fire. A villager was injured in the attack.

Militants belonging to the DHD's Jewel Garlossa faction have been attacking trains passing through the hill section in NC Hills frequently and are also engaged in ethnic violence in the district, which has a sizeable population of the Zeme tribe of the Nagas.

In April, Naga gunmen had attacked a Dimasa village and killed four villagers besides setting several houses on fire.
