manipur Governor, civil organisations condole Tamenglong tragedy

IMPHAL, May 9 : The state Governor Gurbachan Jagat has expressed deep pain and shock at the tragic bus accident involving a Imphal to Tamenglong passenger bus at Sangrungpang in Tamenglong district yesterday which resulted in the death of 12 passengers, including an eight-month old baby boy, and injuries to more than 40 others, some critically.

Terming the accident as most unfortunate, the Governor while showing great concern said that all precautionary and remedial measures should be taken to avoid such accidents in future.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families he prayed that God would give them the strength to bear their irreparable losses.

He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The Zeliangrong Welfare Committee of Manipur University has also conveyed its heartfelt condolences on the death of several passengers in the Tamenglong accident. The committee has sent special condolences for Kadichang Pamei, son of M Pamei of Jadonang Street in Tamenglong who was a 4th Semester student of political science at the Manipur University.

The committee has also appeled to the state government to provide all out relief to the injured and compensation to the families of those who had lost their lives in the accident.

Blaming the condition of the roads for the accident the committee said that the mishap could have been avoided if the roads had been wider.

The United Committee Manipur under the chair of its president, Yumnamcha Dilipkumar held a condolence meet at its office where the members of the central committee of the organisation offered condolences on the deaths caused in yesterday’s accident.

The committee observed two minutes silence for the peace of the departed souls and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured persons.

The UCM also appealed to the state government to provide all necessary assistance to the victims of the accident and their families.

The Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur in a release prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls in the heavenly abode and speedy recovery to the injured victims while extending gratitude to those who had rendered invaluable services in various capacities during the tragedy.

Condemning the frequent overloading and rash and negligent driving of the passenger buses on the route it called such irresponsibility a ‘culpable homicide’ while also asking the drivers and bus owners to perform their duties more carefully. It also advised regular mechanical check up and proper maintenance of the vehicles while announcing punitive actions against those who were negligent of safety on the route.

The ZSUM also urged adequate amount of medical treatment, proper care and attention to the injured victims.

The Zeliangrong Union (AMN) and Zeliangrong Youth Front have, meanwhile, expressed gratitude to those who gave necessary help to the victims of the Tamenglong accident They have also requested help in cash or in kind at the Helpline for Tamenglong Bus Accident Victims organised by the ZU and ZYF at the RIMS hospital.

The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur has also shared the pain and the sorrow of the bereaved families of the 12 dead passengers and prayed for the recovery of those injured in the accident at Sangrungpang.

In an unrelated matter, the council has condemned the 14th Maha Regiment and the IRB personnel over the injuring of four lumbermen who are being treated at the Shija hospital and the death of Lalsanglen at Saikul.

The NIPCO has also sent its condolences over the telephone on the loss of lives in the accident yesterday.

Meanwhile, the PIB defence wing has said in a press release that the people of Tamenglong district have expressed gratitude to the 11 Assam Rifles of the Red Shield Division of the Army for the rescue operation which saved the lives of many victims at the accident site.
