Spl EVMs for Sikkim's Sangha, the only seat with no territory

New Delhi: A 3058-strong electorate of Sangha, the country''s only Assembly segment that has no territorial boundaries, will take part in polling on April 30 to elect its representative to the 32-member Sikkim Assembly.

Special EVMs will be installed at the polling stations, with Sangha voters in their jurisdiction exercising their franchise, said Deputy Election Commissioner J P Prakash.

The Sangha electorate, comprising 3021 monks and 37 nuns, are spread over the four mountain districts of the state. They will be provided with special EVMs to cast their votes.

''Two EVMs will be installed in each of the polling stations, where there are Sangha voters--one will be for the local resident voters and the other for the Sangha voters,'' he said.

The Sangha seat was constituted by the erstwhile Sikkim ruler, the Chogyal, in 1955 when the electoral process was introduced in the otherwise feudal system of governance.

To preserve the distinct identity of the Sangha, only registered monks and nuns can contest the seat. Political parties put up their nominees from among the clergies. Those in the fray are Congress nominee Tshering Lama, Sikkim Democratic Front's Phetook Tshering Bhutia and Samdup Dorjee Lama from the BJP.
