Teenaged girl killed as IRB jawan opens fire

A teenaged girl was killed and five persons, including three women, were injured when an Indian Reserve Battalion jawan opened fire on villagers in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Monday.

Havildar Nuruddin Ahmed, in charge of a temporary camp of 22nd IRB at Rangnagar under Bokolia police station in an inebiriated condition beat up two local children at about 6 pm, official sources said.

As the villagers reached the camp to protest against the assault of the children, Ahmed fired on them killing 17-year old Rani Terongpi and injuring five.

Angry villagers then set ablaze the sentry post of the camp and damaged its temporary structure, the sources said.

On the demand of the local people, the havildar was arrested and placed under suspension.

The injured -- Parvati Terongpi, Omphu Tisso, Chandra Tero, Phulmati Hansipi and Kaseng Terongpi -- were admitted to hospial.
