Rio readies to host panel

Kohima, Jan. 16: The chairman and members of the 13th Finance Commission will arrive here on Monday on a two-day visit to the state.
The commission, accompanied by several senior central level officials, is expected to visit Kigwema village near here and Medziphema village, some 55km from the capital.
The team will hold a series of meetings with state government officials, political parties, NGOs and local body representatives here.
A Special Handloom Expo is also being organised by the industries and commerce department for the Finance Commission members and officials at The Heritage complex.
The commission is expected to discuss various financial issues with the Naga organisations, besides issues pertaining to development activities.
Various Naga organisations are not satisfied with the manner in which successive governments have been handling funds allocated for development.
The Opposition Congress is expected to raise various issues on “misappropriation” of public funds by the Neiphiu Rio-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland government.
A review meeting was held at the chief secretary’s office on Wednesday to look into the details of the programme and arrangements regarding the visit of the commission.
The meeting, chaired by chief secretary Lalhuma, discussed the purpose of the visit and the arrangements to host the team. The chief secretary requested all departments to provide every assistance that may be required at short notice.
The meeting also reviewed security arrangements for the visiting team. The chairman informed the members that if there were changes in the travel plans of the commission, the finance department would coordinate and ensure necessary arrangements.
Official sources said the state government had directed all departments to prepare details on various projects, preferably with photographs, for the Finance Commission.
