Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary exhorted the domestic workers in the rally to come out demanding "minimum wages" for the "most unorganised and helpless "section of the society.
The governor appealed to the employers of domestic workers to "accept them as part of the family". Expressing concern on plights of the "weakest and meekest", Mooshahary, called for "emancipation of a large number of people in the world who are not organised".
The rally, organised by North East Regional Domestic Workers Movement, as part of International Domestic Workers Day, demanded hike of minimum wages and amendment to Minimum Wages Act.
According to a study, almost 90 percent of domestic workers in Meghalaya are women, girls or children and a significant number is traced between the age group of 12 to 25 years.
