Brown sugar seized, man arrested

ITANAGAR, Jan 14 Lohit district police on Sunday apprehended one Chanu Nomon Khamho (30) and seized 35 grammes of brown sugar from him at Chowkham II village.

According to information here, a police team of Chowkham police station, working on a tip-off, chased an auto-rickshaw and stopped it at Tengapani near Manabhum forest in the evening.

The Police team found 35 grammes of brown sugar from the possession of Khamho, who concealed it in a marriage invitation card inside his handbag.

Khamho was nabbed by the police and a case registered against him at Chowkham police station last night.

The Lohit district has become a haven for the drug peddlars. Traditionally, opium is consumed and cultivated. Of late, people have started consuming banned narcotics like brown sugar and cocaine.

Meanwhile, villagers of Bubang-I & II of Changlang district led by Village Welfare Committee voluntarily destroyed the standing crops of opium in their village and surrounding area.

The villagers formed two action group and in a single day destroyed opium crops standing in more than 8.4 hectares in the mountainous terrain.
