International Short Film Festival gets under way

GUWAHATI, May 3 – Right from a glimpse into the varied colours of the human mind to the issues of modern living, the short films screened at the 1st Guwahati International Short Film Festival beginning on Monday provided the cine buffs some really exciting moments.

The two-day festival was inaugurated by Shyamaprasad, eminent filmmaker and director of award winning Malayalam films like Agnisakshi, Ore Kadal, etc., by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Speaking on the occasion, the filmmaker visiting Assam for the first time stressed the need for the young generation to make a foray into creative avenues.

“I am loving it here in Assam because I have seen a lot of creativity and am particularly happy that the genre of short filmmaking is getting a foot hold in the State,” said Shyamaprasad, adding that short film making will provide the young generation an opportunity to broaden their creative horizons.

He observed that films were a strong medium to record the changes happening in the State. “A lot is happening in Assam in all the aspects of life and these need to be recorded,” he said.

It needs to be mentioned here that the festival is aimed at providing a platform to the young film makers in the region and introduce cine buffs to the best and latest from elsewhere in the country and the world. Of late short film making has caught the fancy of the young generation in the State and many among them have succeeded in attracting the attention of the critics for rave reviews.

The genre has actually brought a fresh perspective to the process of filmmaking establishing that a moving tale could be told within a few minutes.

Because There Are Things We Never Forget by Lucas Figueroa of Spain was the opening film of the festival that was attended by several prominent figures like director Nila Madhab Panda, theatre and film actor Adil Hussain and noted Manipuri filmmaker Hoobam Paban Kumar.

Tribute was paid to the late Angshuman Barkataky by screening his film Doctor, Nurse And The Patient.
