Centre seeks new timelines on NRC update

NEW DELHI, Dec 9 – The Centre has asked the Government of Assam to suggest new timelines for completion of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update pilot project. The old deadline expires in December-end.

The Government of Assam has been advised that report of the Cabinet Sub-committee be expedited, Minister of State for Home Affairs M Ramachandran said in a Rajya Sabha reply to a question Kumar Deepak Das.

The Government of Assam has set up a Cabinet Sub-committee to examine the difficulties being faced in the process of updating of NRC and to make recommendations for making the process simple and convenient.

In order to undertake updating of NRC in all districts of Assam, Pilot projects in two districts of Kamrup and Barpeta has been started on June 1, and according to Government of Assam 19,500 applications have been received in Chaygaon revenue circle and 15,669 applications received from Barpeta revenue circle.
