Centre sanctions Rupees 698.21 crore for tourism projects in NE

Shillong, Dec 23 : The Union Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned various projects, including wildlife and forest tourism, in the North East during the 11th plan period till September 30, 2010, an official statement said today.

In Arunachal Pradesh, 46 projects had been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 131.96 crores, 18 projects in Assam at Rs 66.07 crores, 25 projects in Manipur at Rs 71.51 crores, 17 projects in Meghalaya at Rs 41.44 crores, 19 projects in Mizoram at Rs 54.53 crores, 51 projects in Nagaland at Rs 97.11 crores, 73 projects in Sikkim at Rs 167.26 crores and 40 projects in Tripura at Rs 68.33 crores, the statement said.

The development and promotion of tourism was mainly undertaken by the state governments.

The Ministry of Tourism, however, extends Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to the state governments for development of tourism under the scheme of 'Product/Infrastructure Development for Destinations and Circuits', based on the proposals identified in consultations with them subject to availability of funds and priority and adherence to scheme guidelines.

The ministry promotes India as a holistic destination in the domestic and international markets through print and electronic media campaigns, tourism literature, publicity collaterals, travel fairs and road shows, the statement said.
