Indigenous theatre fest of North East

GUWAHATI, Sept 29 – The Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi in collaboration with Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here will be organising an IGNCA National Festival of Indigenous Theatres on North East India some time in February/ March, 2011 to be showcased in New Delhi along with a workshop/ symposium amongst artists, scholars and performers, a press release said.

The indigenous theatre of North-East India which had contributed substantially to the development of artistic and cultural discourse of the eight States through their original pristine forms, substantiated from ritual, dramatic encounters and other proto-theatrical traditions shall be previewed at Guwahati to be finally presented to the national audience at the IGNCA campus in March, 2011 along with the workshop. The Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra shall take responsibility for organising the event.

This is a major innovative step initiated by the IGNCA to bring North East India’s art and culture discourse into greater public visibility after a successful performance festival of North-East India and South-East Asian dances and a fusion programme last year, the release added.
