A truckload of illicit drugs seized

Shillong, Aug 17 (PTI) A truckload of banned drugs was today seized by Customs sleuths in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district.Official sources said the truck was coming from Patna and was going to Tripura when it was intercepted at Lumshnong.

The driver and handyman of the truck were detained, sources said.The drugs, all bottles of codeine-based phensidyl, was staked in about 200 cartoons beneath a layer of rice sacks.

The cost of the drugs would run into lakhs and Customs officials suspect that it was due to be smuggled to Bangladesh where it is sold at triple the price.

People in the dry country of Bangladesh drink phensidyl or cough syrup in excess to get drunk.
