US investment likely in Tripura

AGARTALA, July 20 – Huge US investments are likely to come to the Left-ruled Tripura in service sectors like tourism development, education, business entrepreneurship and other trade affairs.

Ms Beth A Payne, US Consul General in Kolkata, met Pradyot Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur at the Royal Palace here on Monday.

While interacting with Manikya Bahadur, the US Envoy spoke on the prospects of US investments in the land-locked State, basically in the service sectors – tourism, business entrepreneurship and education etc.

Many US investors might pour in good investments in the State which will be helpful for the overall development of its economic scenario. However, members of the State Cabinet or the Chief Minister haven’t expressed any eagerness to meet the Envoy yet.

“The young tribal population has to be exposed to modern English education. Joint efforts can be initiated by the Americans and home State people, especially the Tripura Central University officials to realise the prospect”, said Ms Payne. Manikya Bahadur has assured her that he will be raising the issue with the varsity so that joint workshops can be organised for the cause.

“The Americans are very interested to invest in the State. The thrust sectors of their interest is the service sector namely tourism development, education, business entrepreneurship and other trade affairs”, said Manikya Bahadur. However, he has requested the US Envoy to focus on rural development with agrarian investment prospects.

“Fruit processing industry has got a very rich prospect in Tripura. I have requested Ms Payne to focus on the ADC areas if they are really interested”, he said.

He has also emphasised on enhancement of basic service provided in the State by installing BPO service sectors.
