Guv bats for tightening security apparatus

Itanagar, Jul 28 : Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen (Retd) JJ Singh has underscored the need to strengthen security measures in the state for creating a congenial atmosphere for the people.

The Governor's suggestion came when newly-appointed Director General of Police (DGP) Ms Kanwaljit Deol called on him at the Raj Bhawan last evening.

Several law and order issues concerning the present situation of the state, especially in the twin capital cities, figured in the meeting, official sources said here today.

Gen Singh was specific on tightening security at some sensitive points in the twin capital cities, including the highway connecting Itanagar and Naharlagun and in and around Indira Gandhi Park, especially post sunset.

He also emphasised the importance on training of police personnel.

Laying stress on improving the public-police relations, he asked the DGP to make all-out efforts to increase the confidence of the denizens towards the law enforcement machinery and called for modernisation of police forces in the state to deal with any eventualities.

Other issues like the prevailing security scenario in the district of Tirap and Changlang and abduction case of the forest official of Maharashtra from Kamengbari in West kameng district recently by suspected NDFB militants were also discussed during the meeting.

In a separate meeting with Dr Satbir Silas Bedi, an IAS officer of 1986 batch from AGMUT (Assam, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre, who has been posted to Arunachal Pradesh recently, the Governor stressed on speedy execution of various developmental projects in the state, especially tourism projects like Ganga Lake to facelift the tourism sector in the state, sources added.

Ms Deol, an IPS Officer of 1977 batch from AGMUT Cadre took over the charge of DGP of Arunachal Pradesh after Vimla Mehra, who was transferred to New Delhi in May.

Ms Deol, who is the second lady DGP of Arunachal Pradesh, had earlier served as DIG of the state, besides as Additional Commissioner (Security), Delhi, Joint Commissioner (Traffic), Delhi and Additional Secretary, Parliament House.
