Lapang Asks Centre to Discuss Border With B'desh

Taking strong exception to recent firing between BDR and BSF along the Indo-Bangla border, Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang has asked the Centre to take up the matter with Bangladesh.

"Conducive atmosphere along with peaceful and strong relations is crucial for promotion of trade and investment between Bangladesh and North-East," Lapang said after meeting UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi here yesterday.

Referring to three incidents of firing between BSF and BDR last month, Lapang claimed the incidents have taken place because of "attempts by BDR to disturb the status quo in the area".

Seeking expansion of railway network in the state, Lapang asked the Centre to consider connecting Jogigopa in Assam to Barak Valley via West Garo Hills and the southern slopes of Meghalaya.

"This would provide a viable option for connecting Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram and the Barak Valley of Assam to the mainland India by rail," the chief minister said.

It will also provide access to the mineral-rich southern slopes of Meghalaya apart from promoting trade and commerce within the country and also with Bangladesh, Lapang said.
