Guwahati, March 29 : Assam’s international trade aspirations have found a Thai address. The first overseas office of Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam (ITFAA) was launched in Bangkok this morning and a significant memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with the Thai Chambers of Commerce. The office will be the meeting point for building socio-cultural and trade relationships with Thailand. It will also help execute the Centre’s Look East policy in a more practical manner, a spokesperson for the trade fair association said in a statement. “Now the people of Thailand will not have to depend on Mumbai or Calcutta to get information about the Northeast,” said Anusorn Muttaraid, chairman of the Thailand-India Business Council, while inaugurating the office. The Indian ambassador to Thailand, Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty, who was also present on the occasion, felt that the office would help entrepreneurs from the Northeast establish a business relationship with Thailand. The MoU was signed by Muttaraid and Rajesh Das, vice-president of the trade fair association. Das said the MoU, once executed, is expected to change the face of the Northeast and take the region very close to Southeast Asia. According to the MoU, the fair association and Thai Chamber of Commerce would identify different trade opportunities and pursue those to facilitate business-to-business interface through trade delegations, he added. “One of the important components of the MoU is to facilitate the artisans of Northeast in getting access to knowledge about latest styles and designs used in Thailand and currently in demand in global markets. Such collaborations in the handicraft and handloom sector will be big boost for the region’s artisans and enable them to catch the global market,” Das said. |
