Northeast Parliamentarians to discuss impact of insurgency at Shillong

Imphal, Janu­ary 11 : The North East Com­mon Wealth Par­lia­ment­ary Asso­ci­ation meet­ing sched­uled to be held at Shil­long, Meghalaya from Janu­ary 28 will dis­cuss the impact of insur­gency move­ment in the social and eco­nomic devel­op­ment in the region.

In the four day long meet in which mem­bers of Assembly Com­mit­tees of north East­ern state are to par­ti­cip­ate, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar and gen­eral sec­ret­ary PDT Acharya will take part as observ­ers, oppos­i­tion leader Radhabinod Koi­jam informed today.

He fur­ther said that a team of legis­lature com­pris­ing him­self, MLA O Joy and three other MLAs led by Speaker S Bud­hichandra will rep­res­ent the state in the meet which will held from Janu­ary 28 to 31. State Assembly com­mit­tee is pre­par­ing the ground situ­ation of the state related with the theme of the meet “Impact of Insur­gency on the Social and Eco­nomic Devel­op­ment, Radhabinod added.

The report will study thor­oughly the spate of kid­nap­ping of indi­vidu­als for ransom by under­ground ele­ments, attack­ing houses with bombs on extor­tion demand, the liv­ing con­di­tion of people, and delay in the devel­op­mental activ­it­ies in the state, he revealed.

The mat­ter of killing of people by the state act­ors in the name of counter insur­gency, killing of people without trial occur­ring in the state of Manipur will also be tabled in the meet­ing, Rad­h­binod went on to say.

The meet­ing will also dis­cuss ways to end insur­gency prob­lems in the region through dia­logue, he added.
