NEHU staff firm on ouster of vice chancellor

SHILLONG, Jan 12 – Despite accepting the restoration of the HASA by the Executive Council of NEHU recently, the employees of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) stand firm on its decision to derecognise Prof Pramod Tandon as the vice chancellor of the university.

The general assembly meeting of the NEHU employees including the teaching and non-teaching staff under the banner of the Joint Action Committee held on Monday as a gesture of reciprocity to EC’s decision to revoke its earlier decision on HASA has unanimously decided to temporarily resume duties from January 12 in the interest of theuniversity but will not cooperate with the VC.

Accusing the VC, Prof Pramod Tandon for the ‘unnecessary crisis’ in the NEHU, the meeting also decided to hold an indefinite sit-in demonstration as a mark of protest against the VC.

The Joint Action Committee believes that the confidence expressed by the EC members in Prof Tandon is rather vacuous.

JAC Chairman, Prof SB Prasad informed that earlier in the day a request was received for a meeting from the Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor (PVC) and the Registrar but the committee in view of the no confidence resolution ofthe general assembly refused to participate in any meeting with the Vice Chancellor. However, the JAC agreed to meet with the PVC and the Registrar.

The JAC in the meeting with the PVC and the Registrar has informed both about the resolution taken by the general assembly and said that the committee maintains that as long as the no confidence resolution remains in place, Prof Tandon will remain unacceptable to the employees.
