Pioneer of investigative journalism in Manipur fondly remembered

IMPHAL, Nov 11: The 5th death anniversary of Lamyanba Yawolloi NK Sanajaoba, eminent journalist, locally known as the "Pen Warrior" was today observed at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal.

Sanajaoba was the editor of the now discontinued, but once very popular monthly called Lamyanba.

The function was organized by the NK. Sanajoba Memorial Observation Committee.

Speaking at the observation function on the topic "Media-yesterday-today and tomorrow", senior journalist and former president of AMWJU, AK Sanaton, said looking back at the state of the media in the past in the state and comparing it to the present day, the media today is fortunate to have access to much more facilities.

He added that the media now includes the electronic media.

He stated that the press/media should be made free in all respect. However he felt that the right to freedom of expression of the media fraternity was missing due to the conflict situation in the state and maintained free movement should be provided to the journalists.

He said journalists should also be neutral in discharging their duties.

Commenting on the move of the government to establish a government run media, he said that huge amount will be lost in vain and termed the move as surprising.

He said this would further complicate the problem of independent journalists who earn very low salaries.

He further recollected the failure to implement of the Manisana wage board recommendations in Manipur and expressed the hope for cooperation between media, police, civilians and NGOs, for bringing about better development in the state.

Naorem Birendrakumar, veteran journalist also spoke at the function.

Floral tributes were also paid by the gathering to the late veteran scribe.
