Meghalaya govt employees call off agitation

Shillong, Sept 9 : The striking Meghalaya government employees have called off their agitation and agreed to accept the revised pay.

A day after the cabinet decided to put on hold the new pay revision following a two-day strike launched by the employees, they yesterday decided to accept the new pay scale with retrospective effect from January 1, 2007 but said they would pursue negotiations with the government.

"The association has also unanimously decided to accept the Cabinet decision to implement the new pay scale with retrospective effect from January 1, 2007, until a new arrangement is made," Additional General Secretary of Grade IV Government Employees' Association W Khyriem said after a meeting of the association.

The employees had been demanding the pay revision with retrospective effect from January, 2006, but the government made it clear that it was facing severe financial constraints.
