Son admits to killing parents

Dibrugarh, Aug. 13: Police today claimed to have cracked the case of the murder of an elderly couple on Sunday night at their residence in Natun Chiring Gaon near Milan Nagar here.
The couple’s youngest son, Jayanta Dutta, today confessed before the police that he had killed his parents as they had continuously spurned his requests for money.
While committing the crime, Jayanta tried to imitate professional killers, trying all the tricks in the book to throw the police off the trail before the long arms of law finally caught up with him.
The police had found the bodies of Nabin Dutta, 65, a retired post and telegraph employee and his wife Sashi Prava Dutta, 52, after neighbours suspected foul play since they had remained indoors till quite late in the morning.
“After hacking his parents with a dao (machete), Jayanta hid the weapon. Thereafter, he virtually ransacked the entire house so that the police would be led to believe that there had been a burglary/dacoity. However, today he confessed that he had killed his parents,” Baburam Baruah, the investigating officer and the in-charge of Milan Nagar police outpost, said.
Jayanta, who had returned from Miao in Arunachal Pradesh, was held by the police for questioning along with one of his friends, who, though, was set free later.
A team of magistrates and police also recovered the weapon used for murdering the couple today from a ditch, around 10 metres from the residence. The weapon was wrapped in old rags.
“It was a sensational murder case which had created sharp reactions in society here, since Milan Nagar is a posh locality. We are happy that we could book the murderer within a very short span of time,” Baruah said.
