GANGTOK: The agricultural State of Haryana pays the highest minimum daily wages to NREGA labourers as per a report from Centre belying the popular notion here that Sikkim pays the highest minimum daily wages.
Despite frequent claims by the State government that labourers here are paid the highest minimum daily wages, Sikkim figures tenth among all the States and Union Territories in the nation as per the Centre’s latest State wise wage rate under NREGA.
The Central list informs that workers under NREGA at Harayna get a minimum daily wage of Rs. 141 and those at Chanidgarh get Rs. 140.
The Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands pays a minimum daily wage of 139 to 130 rupees everyday, Lakshdweep pays 115 rupees, Dadar and Nagar Haveli pays Rs. 108 and Daman & Diu pays Rs. 102 and are nose ahead of Sikkim in this regard who pays Rs. 100 as daily wages to NREGA labourers.
The Union Ministry of Rural Development had with effect from January 1 this year, notified the wage rate to be paid to NREGA workers.
Wage rate notified by the Central Government in respect of all States takes into account the wage rate as fixed by the respective State Government prior to this date.
In the Northeastern States, Mizoram pays a minimum daily wage of Rs. 110 to NREGA labourers.
Sikkim shares the tenth place in the country by paying minimum daily wage of Rs. 100 with Gujrat, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
