Monsoon below normal 18% : IMD

There is improvement in cumulative rainfall of the season from scanty to deficient condition over Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi. It deteriorated from deficient to scanty rainfall condition



Due to the northward shifting of the monsoon trough, the rainfall significantly decreased over south peninsula and central India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. There was significant improvement in the monsoon rainfall activity over northeast India and was near normal during this week, it added. Though, the rainfall scenario slightly improved over northwest India compared to last week, it was still below normal by 12%, the weather bureau said.

The sub-division wise rainfall distribution during the week (23-29 July, 2009). Out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions, rainfall was excess in 6, normal in 11, deficient in 9 and scanty in 10 sub-divisions during the week.
Seasonal Rainfall Scenario (1st June to 29th July)
The cumulative seasonal rainfall for the country as a whole during this year’s monsoon has so far been 19% below the Long Period Average (LPA). Progressive cumulative rainfall departure from LPA during monsoon season 2009 for the country as a whole and over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

The sub-divisionwise cumulative rainfall during the period from 1 June to 29 July is shown in Fig.2. Out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions, the cumulative rainfall during 1 June to 29 July 2009 was excess/normal in 17 and deficient in 18 and scanty over 1 (West Uttar Pradesh) meteorological sub-divisions. There is improvement in cumulative rainfall of the season from scanty to deficient condition over Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi. It deteriorated from deficient to scanty rainfall condition over west Uttar Pradesh and from normal to deficient condition over Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry and east Madhya Pradesh.
Meteorological conditions for this week
  • The monsoon trough at mean sea level lies to the north of its normal position, closer to foothills of the Himalayas. It is likely to remain so during next week.
  • A feeble off-shore trough is likely to persist along the west coast.
Weather forecast for one week:
  • Ongoing enhanced rainfall activity likely to continue along the foothills of Himalayas, Bihar, Sub Himalaya West Bengal & Sikkim and northeastern states.
  • Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity is likely over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and north Orissa during 2nd half of the week.
  • Scattered rainfall activity is likely to continue over northwest India.
  • Subdued rainfall activity is likely over western, central and peninsular parts of the country.
