Fairytale begins for duo

Assam beauties selected to represent N-E at pageant
Guwahati, May 12 : The catchline simply says, “For fairytale endings”.
For two young beauties of Assam, it was, in fact, just the beginning of this fairytale as they were selected as the representatives of the region for the finals of the Dabur Gulabari-Sananda Tilottama ’09, the biggest beauty pageant of eastern India.
The duo — Liza Chakraborty of Guwahati and Shyashree Saikia of Jorhat — were selected by a three-judge panel in the Northeast prelims of the contest held at the Vishwaratna Hotel here today.
Hosted by Sananda, a part of ABP Pvt Ltd, the beauty pageant with the theme “For fairytale endings” is being held in association with EverYuth and Seagrams Blenders Pride Magical Nights.
The two selected finalists will try to emulate and go beyond the likes of Priyanka Laurembaum who was adjudged the first runner-up in 2006 while last year Debashree Roy had won the titles of Miss Photogenic and Miss Well-Groomed in the Tilottama finals.
The two contestants will join eight other finalists — selected from other parts of eastern India — for the finals to be held at the Oberoi Grand in Calcutta in the last part of June.
While Liza was the winner in the Northeast prelims, Shyashree came second. Nabanita Sharma was adjudged the second runners-up but she will be able to join the finals only if any one of the top two backs out, an organiser announced.
The two were selected from among six who made the final cut after the screening of 18 applicants selected for the Northeast prelims.
“It feels great. It’s very exciting,” said Shyashree after the results, squinting against the bright lights as she savoured the feel of being in the spotlight.
Liza, too, said it was a “moment to savour”.
Standing tall at 5 feet 6 inches, Liza is a degree student of Guwahati Commerce College and won over the judges with her supreme confidence and intelligence. Shyashree has appeared for her higher secondary finals from DCB College, Jorhat.
The final contestants will be groomed by top model Noyonika Chatterjee for a month in Calcutta.
Past winners of this coveted beauty pageant include Bollywood stars like Bipasha Basu, Celina Jaitley and Koena Mitra.
The three judges included fashion designer and choreographer Prashantt Ghosh, actress and academician Shrutimala Dowerah and designer Medha Saikia.
Ghosh said they “stressed on intelligence” in selecting the two finalists. “Everything else can be learnt. They can be groomed. Intelligence is something they have to carry on their own,” he said.
