Hijackers release Indian train passengers

Maoist rebels in India who hijacked a train earlier today have released the 300 passengers.
Indian police say about 200 armed Maoist rebels hijacked a train in the eastern state of Jharkhand and held more than 300 passengers hostage.

The rebels captured the train at a railway station near the state capital.

A police spokesman says authorities were preparing to rescue the passengers when the Maoists released them.

The train hijacking comes in the middle of the Indian elections, in an area that was among the first to go to the polls last week, and voting will continue there on Thursday.

The Maoist rebels say they are fighting for the rights of landless farmers and neglected tribal people.
