Delhi fumes at Pakhi flight

Guwahati, Dec 27 : The Union home ministry has expressed “extreme anguish” over the escape of Samsul Haq Talukdar alias Pakhi Miyan from custody here on Monday night after the CBI took “strong” note of the incident and asked that the matter be taken up with Dispur.
The CBI was investigating the murder of a revenue intelligence officer, Tarun Dutta, in the city in 2006 in which Miyan is the prime suspect.
Sources in the state home department today said the home ministry was far from amused over the escape and wanted that those guilty of abetting it be brought to book.
The sources said it was only after Dispur received the Delhi rap that chief minister Tarun Gogoi last evening ordered a high-level inquiry into the escape of the drug mafia and aspiring politician. The probe will be conducted by Rajiv Kumar Bora, commissioner, home and political. Gogoi is in charge of the home department as well.
“They (CBI) are afraid that Miyan’s escape would hinder the investigation into the murder case which was otherwise progressing smoothly,” a source said.
The CBI had interrogated Miyan after his arrest in Calcutta in April this year and the agency was confident that it had enough evidence to nail him in the murder case.
The government yesterday suspended a registrar of Gauhati Medical College Hospital, who was suspected to have played a role in the escape. It was he who had recommended shifting Miyan to the hospital.
Earlier, three constables, who were detailed to guard Miyan in the hospital from where he fled, were arrested and suspended. Miyan escaped after drugging one of the policemen, who was awake and playing cards with him. While another was sleeping, the third constable had earlier left the hospital to catch some rest.
The source said the chief minister has instructed that no stone be left unturned to punish the guilty and recapture Miyan.
